How can a workplace foster collaboration, wellbeing, and meaningful public service?
March Studio partnered with the City of Santa Monica to transform an underutilized rooftop addition at City Hall into the new home of the Office of Civic Wellbeing. Designed to support a collaborative model of public service, the workplace replaces traditional office layouts with flexible spaces that encourage teamwork, focused work, stakeholder engagement, and informal connection.
Natural light, outdoor access, and adaptable work settings create an environment that prioritizes employee wellbeing while supporting the evolving needs of a multidisciplinary team. The rooftop terrace extends the workplace beyond its interior, offering opportunities for gathering, reflection, and community engagement. Throughout the project, thoughtful programming and spatial organization balance public-facing functions with dedicated staff spaces, creating a workplace that is both welcoming and highly functional.
More than an office renovation, the project reflects a new vision for civic workplaces, one where architecture supports collaboration, strengthens organizational culture, and empowers those working to improve the wellbeing of their community.
