March Studio helps nonprofits and community-based organizations improve people’s everyday lives through authentic, purpose-oriented architecture.
Earlier this summer, March Studio principal Todd Erlandson led If I Had a Hammer—a seven-week immersive design-build studio at Deep Springs College, a remote institution rooted in academics, labor, and self-governance. Students explored vernacular architecture through hands-on construction, collaborative decision-making, and close observation of the desert landscape. Guided by Deep Springs’ mission, the course focused on building with intention and a strong sense of place, ending with a small open-air chapel that captures the spirit of the college’s founding values.
