Untitled No. 1 is a nature-based preschool in the Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica. Join 4-year-old, Jones, as he leads you on a tour of the school from a child's point of view.
The school’s director, Laila Taslimi, chose to work with March Studio based on our experience designing Reggio-inspired schools through a cultural lens. We collaborated closely with her to create a flexible environment that supports their educational philosophy and mission: to serve the community by offering children a joyous and engaging preschool experience, full of opportunities to learn from nature and from one another.
Teacher Sam Foreman talks about the sensory and emotional qualities of each space; the welcoming and warm feeling of the Library which acts as a transition space, the quality of the light and friendly energy of the kitchen which further connects kids to nature and their food, and the love for and energy of the Living Room Studio which anchors the children’s day and allows for big building ideas. “We are still learning what the kids want in these spaces,” Sam explains. The child-centered environment allows for flexibility and encourages provocation, inquiry, and innovation.
Watching Jones explore and discover the spaces at Untitled No. 1 School seems to reflect that, through an environment that is inviting, engaging, and exciting for children and teachers.
